Styles

People have been defending themselves and their loved ones for thousands of years. Many systems of armed and unarmed combat have been developed and refined over the centuries. Styles and techniques have been lost, forgotten, transferred, as well as passed on to future generations in one form or another. It's impossible to say exactly when and where many arts started.

The main style of martial art studied at Kicks is Tae Kwon Do. As with many schools today, more than one art is studied. In many cases, including Kicks, these other arts are not only studied but they are combined to create a program that is unique to the school. Although we may teach different styles in the same school and program, here at Kicks we keep them separate so that the art is kept in the same form as it was meant to be. In this way, we stay true to the style and to those who have passed it down for us.

Tae Kwon Do =This style originated in Korea in the early 1900's. In 1910 Japan invaded Koreaand put many restrictions on the Korean people. These restrictions were in place for many years and wereultimately lifted at the end of WWII. During these years of oppression there were numerous Kwans that werepracticed in secret and otherwise hidden from their oppressors.

At the end of WWII a number of these Kwans united under the name Tae Soo Do and a few years later the name Tae Kwon Do was adopted. Since that time, Tae Kwon Do has seen many changes. Organizations and federations were formed and they each had their own emphasis. Some are more sport and others rely more on
sparring. Many people have taken what they like, remove aspects they don’t care for, and added their own spin
on the art. These are all valid styles.

Eskrima = A system of self-defense that was developed as we know it in the Philippines. This art involves many
fighting ranges from very close combat using empty hands and short weapons, all the way to combat using long range weapons. The beginning practitioner of this art learns strikes, blocks, thrusts, and evasions using empty hands and short sticks.

Okinawan Kobudo = This form of martial arts uses weaponry that were once farming and fishing implements. Weapons such as the bo, kama, nunchaku, sai, oar, and tonfa are used.

Ju Jitsu = This is a combat art. It is often called the “soft art” but is anything but soft. It combines throws, locks, strikes and grappling techniques that are integrated into a system of self-defense that is extremely effective against armed and unarmed aggressors. There are many variations of Ju Jitsu and many different systems throughout the world.
